POWER Plays: Get Focused to Win Every Round

Jan 4, 2012 at 6:08am by Sugar Ray Leonard

Fights can be won or lost depending on the boxer’s abilities to block out all distractions. So, how do they block out all diversions? With tunnel vision and focus, and not letting outside distractions affect them.

For some people, getting focused can be difficult. However, everybody has the ability to use tunnel vision and focus on his or her objective or goal whether it’s winning a fight or graduating college. You cannot let fear get in the way – the fear of failure. Once you let go of fear and get focused with tunnel vision, there’s nothing you won’t be able to accomplish and win.

If you are not in the ring with high adrenaline production, which actually assists in tunnel vision, there are some beginning exercises to eliminate the fears and excess noise. First, set your specific goal. Second, visualize it as if you are looking through a tunnel at your goal. Once you are in that frame of mind and focused, you will surely win every round.

If you have a story you would like to share about a time being focused helped you, please do so in the comments section below.

Love your new website Ray. You are class in and out of the ring. I watched the fight you had with Hagler again today. When I was a kid no one gave you a chance to win that fight. Larry Merchant (bless his heart) ate his words when you won. Being from Maryland you made us really proud. I watched that Hagler fight about ten times that first week after the fight. That will go down as one of the greatest fights of all time. You were the talk of the town and my senior high after defeating Marvin. He was a beast but you are still poetry in motion. Watching you fight was like personally seeing Michelangelo paint a picture. You knew that something special was brewing. Man, you are one gifted speaker too and I wish you all the best in 2012. God bless you and your family and I would love to help out with your foundation. If I can serve in any way let me know. Thanks for teaching us about POWER.

Hii Mr Leonard I really love you your new site! The motivational videos are great! When I was a teenager you was my hero! I drew strength from your fights and the way you conducted yourself in and out of the ring. I bought my Dad a ticket and we watched you on that special night when you beat Hagler, we saw it live at the royal festival hall here in London, that fight was full of special moments from you fighting your way out of the corner in the 9th and Angelo Dundee shouting 6 minutes!!! New champ!!! Lifting your spirits higher such magical moments man...I was holding the sandwiches and I squashed them to mush! Lol!
I want to thank you for the inspiration then and now, if you ever come to London and hold a motivatinal speech please keep us informed as I'll love to be there!
      Thanks again champ!
